The two jobs of a homeschool transcript

A homeschool transcript has to do two things at once: it has to describe the work your kid did, in a format the receiver already knows how to read; and it has to be trusted, even though the parent who graded the work is also the parent who issued the transcript.

The first job is a content problem. The second job is a verification problem. Most homeschool-transcript guides cover only the first. The result is a beautifully formatted PDF that an admissions office still has to treat as “parent-issued, unverified.”

What goes on a homeschool transcript

Student identification

Legal name, date of birth, address, parent/guardian name, dates of attendance, expected graduation year. The basic header: admissions readers expect this in the top inch.

Course list with credits

Course title, year/semester taken, credit value (typically 1.0 for a year-long high-school-equivalent course, 0.5 for a semester), letter grade, and grading scale used. Every course listed should be defensible with an artifact: a syllabus, a portfolio, an evaluation, or a proctored exam result.

GPA and grading scale

Both unweighted and (if applicable) weighted GPAs. State the scale explicitly: "4.0 unweighted, 4.5 weighted (honors +0.5, AP/college +1.0)." Without the scale, a 3.7 is meaningless.

Standardized test scores

SAT, ACT, AP, CLEP, dual-enrollment college transcripts, state assessments where applicable. Test scores carry disproportionate weight on a homeschool transcript precisely because the grading party (you) is also the issuing party (you).

Course descriptions document

How admissions readers actually read a homeschool transcript

Admissions readers spend roughly 8–15 minutes on a first-pass application read. A homeschool file gets the same time as a public-school file, not extra. The reader is doing four things, fast:

Cross-checking the transcript GPA against any standardized test scores. Big gaps trigger a closer look.
Confirming credit completion against the receiving institution's minimum requirements.
Reading the course descriptions for evidence of rigor, not just course titles.

Common mistakes that flag your application

Listing courses without credit values, so the receiver cannot total credits earned.

What “verifiable” actually means

When an admissions office, employer, scholarship program, or state agency says they want a “verified” transcript, they mean three specific things:

Provenance: they can confirm who issued the document.
