How to write homeschool course descriptions colleges can actually use.

The course-descriptions document is the most-requested companion to a homeschool transcript, and the one most families write badly, late, or not at all. Here is the format, a full worked example, the five-part anatomy, and the mistakes that quietly undermine the transcript the descriptions are supposed to support.

What a course description is

A course description is a 150–300 word summary of one course on the transcript. It answers, in order, the four questions an admissions reader has about any course title they cannot look up in a school profile:

What did the course cover? The actual content, named specifically.
What materials were used? Texts, curricula, labs, primary sources.
How was mastery evaluated? Tests, papers, projects, external exams, and how they weighed into the grade.
What is the credit based on? Hours, curriculum completion, or an external issuer.

The full set (one description per transcript row) is compiled into a single companion document, typically 8–15 pages for a four-year record. A public-school transcript gets this context for free from the school's profile and course catalog; a homeschool transcript has to carry it itself. The descriptions document is how course titles become evidence of rigor instead of a list of claims.

When colleges ask for course descriptions

There is no universal requirement. What any given receiver wants depends on that receiver. In practice the requests cluster in three places:

Application platforms. The Common App's homeschool section gives the supervising parent, as counselor, space to describe the curriculum. The descriptions document is what fills it.
Published homeschool-applicant policies. Many selective private colleges and some state systems list course descriptions among their homeschool requirements. Check each target school's admissions page for homeschool applicants. Policies differ and change.
Follow-up requests. Scholarship programs, honors colleges, NCAA eligibility review, and individual admissions offices sometimes ask mid-cycle. This is the request that hurts if the document does not already exist.

Because you cannot know in September which receiver will ask in January, the working assumption is simple: write them as you go, and have the compiled document ready before the first application goes out.

A worked example

Here is a complete description, at target length, in the five-part shape described below:

Biology with Lab: Grade 10 (2025–2026) · 1.0 credit · Final grade: A−

A full-year, college-preparatory laboratory biology course covering cell structure and function, biochemistry basics, genetics and heredity, evolution and natural selection, ecology, and human body systems. Primary text: Miller & Levine, Biology (Pearson), all units, with supplementary readings from current science journalism selected weekly. Laboratory work comprised 22 hands-on labs using a standard high-school lab kit, including microscopy of prepared and student-made slides, enzyme-activity and osmosis experiments, Mendelian genetics with fast-growing plants, owl-pellet and comparative-anatomy dissection, and a semester-long backyard ecology field study with a dated observation journal. Each lab produced a written report in standard format (hypothesis, method, data, sources of error, conclusion). Mastery was evaluated through publisher chapter tests taken closed-book (40%), graded lab reports (30%), proctored midterm and final exams (20%), and the ecology field journal (10%); the final grade reflects this weighting on a standard 90/80/70 scale. Credit basis: approximately 160 hours of instruction, laboratory, and assessment across 34 weeks, consistent with a one-credit (Carnegie-unit) laboratory science course.

Notice what makes it work: every sentence is a noun a reader can weigh: a named text, a countable number of labs, a stated weighting, an hours figure. There is no adjective doing load-bearing work anywhere in it.

The anatomy, section by section

1. Header line: title, year, credit, grade

One line matching the transcript row exactly: course title, grade level and school year taken, credit value, final grade. If the description header and the transcript row disagree (different title, different credit), the reader stops trusting both documents. Write the description from the transcript row, not from memory.

2. Content covered

Two to four sentences naming the actual topics, in the order a course catalog would name them. "Studied biology" is a claim; "cell structure and function, genetics and heredity, evolution and natural selection, ecology, and human body systems" is a course. Specific nouns are what let a reader judge rigor in seconds.

3. Materials and texts used

Name the primary text (title and author or publisher), plus significant secondary materials: lab kits, online course providers, primary sources, software. This is the fastest rigor signal on the page. A reader who knows the field can place a named textbook immediately. If the course was parent-designed from multiple sources, say so and name the main ones.

4. How mastery was evaluated

The section most parents skip and most readers look for first. Name the instruments and, ideally, the weighting: chapter tests, lab reports, papers with revision, oral exams, a proctored final, a scored external exam. This is what makes the grade on the transcript mean something. "Mom graded it" is the assumption you are writing against; be specific enough to displace it.

5. Credit basis

One sentence stating why this was worth the credit assigned: roughly 120–180 hours of work across the year (the Carnegie-unit convention), or completion of a standard full-year curriculum, or an earned college grade for dual enrollment. For a 0.5-credit course, the semester equivalent. This closes the loop between hours, content, and the number on the transcript.

How many you need, and the fast way to get there

One description per course row: for a typical 24–28 credit transcript, that is 24–28 descriptions. Three shortcuts that do not cost credibility:

Dual-enrollment courses need only a line or two plus a pointer to the college's catalog and transcript. An independent issuer already documents them.
Repeated structures (four years of a foreign language with the same program, a multi-year math sequence) can share the materials-and-evaluation language, with content differentiated per year.
Write at course end, not at application time. Fifteen minutes in June with the graded work in hand replaces an evening of reconstruction in senior fall, and produces a visibly better document.

Common mistakes

Padding: 600-word descriptions stuffed with adjectives. A reader with eight minutes for the whole file will skim or skip them. 150–300 words, dense with nouns, beats prose.
Copying the curriculum publisher's catalog copy verbatim. Readers have seen the same marketing paragraph from a hundred applicants; it describes the product, not what your student actually did. Name the curriculum, then describe the work in your own words.
Describing evaluation nowhere: content and materials with no mention of how the grade was earned, which quietly converts every A on the transcript back into an unverified claim.
Grade inflation without evidence: an A described as "read the textbook and discussed it." If the description cannot support the grade, either the description is incomplete or the grade is.
Descriptions that contradict the transcript: different titles, different credit values, a course described that never appears on the transcript, or vice versa.
Writing them all in the month before applications from memory. Senior-year reconstructions are visibly thinner than descriptions written the semester the course happened.

The failure mode of the descriptions document is not bad writing. It is drift. The transcript lives in one file, the descriptions in another; a course gets renamed or a credit adjusted in one and not the other; two versions of each go out to different receivers over an application season. Every mismatch a reader catches costs trust, and the reader cannot tell an innocent version-skew from an edit made after the fact.
